“I want to be the first of my family to go to college. Now I am learning about photography and video production because it is my passion. It has always been my dream to see my pictures and videos be published internationally, so people can hear my story and that of my community.”

“I thought that I deserved to live in poverty, that I was never going to break this cycle. However, throughout the past few years, my mentality changed. Now my biggest wish is to help children overcome that mentality as well. This is the reason I decided to become a teacher, not only to teach math or science but lessons of life.”

“She is from the dump” has been a phrase I have heard all of my life and people marginalize me because of it. If I had continued to believe this, I wouldn’t be a Community Leader. But instead I fight for people to have a dignifying home, clean streets, water, and much more. Because this is my community too!”

“I would see thieves and bad people come to our community and hide because we didn’t have any security. I felt anger and fear at the same time! It wasn’t until we built a gate that I felt I was taking control of my security and my community’s security.”

“I saw many kids getting sick due to water contamination. This was one of the main reasons I became a Community Leader, I couldn’t let this problem continue. That’s why we started our drainage system, and now everybody has water in their homes.”

“My daughter was born with a birth defect and I felt I couldn’t continue with my life. How was I suppose to take care of her when I lived so close to the Garbage Dump? Instead of giving up, I started fighting for her. I decided to lay a concrete floor so my daughter would stop having respiratory problems because of the dust and now I want to build a cinder block home.”

“As a kid I felt anger and resentment towards my father. However; that changed when I met God, because He taught me how to forgive. Now I want to teach other kids the benefits of being forgiven by Him, and forgiving others.”
Kelvin, a Treasure, continues to study here at PHA. He also volunteers at our Treasure's Club, spending time with kids.

“Now that I have my own business my dream is to supply jewelry to companies and have salespeople working for me. Not only will this help me and my family but it will also create jobs for people in my community. I like helping my community by teaching other women how to make custom-handmade jewelry.”
Natali Barrios is a gifted entrepreneur who crafts unique handmade jewelry.

“I understand what many of the youth in my community are going through, because I went through it too and it was very hard. Once a week I meet with some young people from my community to share my testimony and the word of God with them.”
Luis Perez now works at Potter's House, is married to his sweetheart and is studying to get his bachelors degree.
