“Thank you for helping and supporting my school. It looks very nice and I am happy to be study here. I am sad that I can only study till sixth grade here.”
Edvin, 11 years old, is the second child out of four. He lives with his mom, Jessica, and three sisters in the Altamira community. His father doesn’t live with them. He abandon them. Jessica washes clothes in order to feed and clothe her children.
Even though his father isn´t with them, Edvin dreams of working as a mechanic such as his father. One of Edvin’s greatest characteristics is his willingness to help others. Even though he is a child, he is always there lending a hand.
During the wall construction of the public school in Altamira, Edvin would actively join the group of servants (volunteers) and Potter’s House staff. While other children would play around, he would be sweating and working alongside the group. Edvin felt that he needed to be play a big role on what was happening in his school.
During the last phase of the project, we had the opportunity to invite Edvin to eat with us. We were shocked when he told us that it was his first time eating a hamburger and at a restaurant. Even though Altamira is very near the main city of Chiquimula, there are still many families that don’t have enough to feed this type of food to their family.
In order for Edvin to achieve his dream of becoming a mechanic, his mother would have to work really hard in order to send him to continue studying in the main city of Chiquimula. In Altamira, there aren’t any high schools for Edvin to attend.
Many children of this community dream of becoming professionals, but they have a limited education and this affects them reaching those dreams.
