VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

THE NEED

The Guatemalan school year runs from January to October. Children have two months of vacation from school starting in November. Children look forward to vacation with great expectation. But often, children living in poverty do not have the chance to be children. Many have to stay home and take care of their younger siblings, while others have to work, or those that wander the streets are at risk of being recruited by drug dealers or gang members.

THE APPROACH

The exciting news is that Potter’s House has been preparing a Vacation Bible School (VBS) for our Treasures in November to ensure children have a vacation with purpose. The goal is to reach 1,750 Treasures from the Guatemala City garbage dump community and 250 Treasures from the countryside of Guatemala. Using the theme “How can I follow God?” from biblical principles, the Treasures will learn that God’s followers read the bible, obey His voice, share with others about Jesus, worship and pray, and serve others.

We need $25 for each child. They will be receiving nutritious snacks and materials for their bible lessons for a week.

PRAYER REQUESTS

We’ve prepared all year long to serve the Treasures through VBS. We invite you to lift up the Treasures in prayer so they can grow to become God’s followers while learning the truths of the Bible.

PRAYER 1: CHILDREN WHO FOLLOW GOD READ HIS WORD

Dear God, thank you for every child who will attend VBS this week. We praise you because together with Potter’s House staff and volunteers they’ll learn how to follow you. We ask you to bring these children back every day this week and that every child’s heart is open to you. We ask you lord, to bless the Potter’s House staff with each child and for your strength to create in each child a desire to know you. Thank you for sending Jesus to forgive our sins. We pray that many of them ask you to come into their lives. Thank you for showing us how Josiah followed you and promised to obey you. We chose to follow his example today. In Jesus mighty name, Amen.

PRAYER 2: CHILDREN WHO FOLLOW GOD HEAR HIS VOICE

Dear God, Thank you for every Treasure attending VBS. The time they get to spend in Your Word is precious. We praise you because they are learning about how to follow you and to hear your voice like the people from Nineveh did when you sent Jonah to speak to them. Please touch their hearts so they accept Jesus into their hearts. Our prayer is that they submit to follow you for the rest of their lives and hear your voice in every step they take. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

PRAYER 3: CHILDREN WHO FOLLOW GOD SHARE WITH OTHERS ABOUT JESUS

Our God, we praise you for this day. Thank you because, through VBS this month, the Treasures are learning how to follow you. We pray that everything they learn at VBS will stay in their hearts so they can share with others about your love. Heavenly Father, thank you for teaching Peter that Your love is for everyone. Help the Treasures to follow Peter’s example of being courageous to share about Jesus as he did with Cornelius. May they want to follow you and share about you with others. Thank you for your love for us, Your love endures forever. In the mighty name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

PRAYER 4: CHILDREN WHO FOLLOW GOD PRAISE AND PRAY

Dear Lord, please help the Treasures remember how to pray and who to pray for: leaders, community, friends and family, and for themselves. Thank you for teaching them how to live. May they learn that they can pray and praise you anywhere and at any time. Make them feel comfortable talking to you about their deepest concerns. Help them to remember that you are always good, you always love us and you are always faithful as we follow you. Thank you for David’s example of praying and praising you. May the Treasures become like David and dedicate every day of their lives to speak with you, praise you, and listen for your voice. We love you! In the mighty name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

PRAYER 5: CHILDREN WHO FOLLOW GOD SERVE OTHERS

Dear God, we thank you for every single Treasure that attended VBS. They have spent a joyful week. We pray that what they learned this week will help each heart be open to you and your Word. Thank you because we can learn about Lydia’s life in the Bible. She’s a great example of serving others as she did with Paul and his friends. We pray this story encourages the Treasures to desire to follow You and serve others as well. Please help them remember everything they learned this week about following you. May these teachings stay with them for their rest of their lives and they grow to become great followers and witnesses of the Gospel. In the name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
